disCONNEXION, 2002 – 2003
Installation composed by 8 c-prints, 76x62cm each

The series disCONNEXION by well-known Chinese artist Xing Danwen is the result of a photographic reportage the artist carried out in 2002 about the open air electronic dumps located in the southern China province of Guangdong. The artist, who has always focused on themes like urban development and its subsequent environmental impact, uses the series mentioned above to document the presence of heaps of electronic trash like mobiles, computers, and electric wires of any kind. Therefore she points out the existence of a serious problem which affects many other countries apart from China: environmental pollution. The shocking situation of these digital dumps is emphasized also by the alarming working conditions of the workers of the dumps: Chinese migrant workers who, to make a
living, run serious health risks since they sort electronic trash without any protection.
