Maria Rosa Jijon
OLDPLAST, 2007
Video, 12 minutes
The video created by Ecuadorian artist Maria Rosa Jijon portrays the hardships undergone everyday by the inhabitants of a huge Colombian district whose economy is entirely based on trash. Moravia, this quarter of Medellin, has 37,000 inhabitants that since 1977 when the municipal dump was opened have survived thanks to their work of sorting recyclable materials. The artist has decided to document this rather interesting reality with her Neo-realist style video whose subjects are the inhabitants of this city’s district. The video was shot in 2006 upon invitation of the artists’ collective El Puente.
